The AFX FX-41 is a new dual sport helmet and a big step beyond the AFX FX-39, with a drop-down inner shield, lots more vents, and crazy aggressive styling. Weight is a reasonable 3.8 lbs for a size L, pretty typical for a helmet with a drop down visor.

Our tester, who uses an FX-39 regularly, commented that the additional vents work well, generating lots of airflow, but combined with the aggressive styling the FX-41 is louder than other dual sport helmets like the Arai XD-4 and LS2 MX 453. Shield clarity is good, and the shield is quite large. Fit with eyeglasses is best in class. We have not yet tried it with goggles, but we will ASAP.

Of course the FX-41 does not have the same build quality as a $530 Arai XD4. However, it is a solid DS helmet with good features, at a price that is accessible to most any rider.

A NOTE ABOUT FIT: AFX FX-41 fit is DIFFERENT than its brother, the FX-39. That helmet ran large, the FX-41 does not. Please use the size chart if possible.

Features:
  • Aerodynamic shell design constructed using an advanced lightweight composite poly-alloy
  • Flip-up, flush fit, quick release, single turn screw face shield with side covers
  • Shield itself is optically correct compound curved, scratch-resistant and protects against UV-rays
  • Shield can also be used without the visor with included side cover kit
  • Smoke tinted inner flip down sun shield system with left side slide lever
  • Helmet liner and cheek pads made with a hypoallergenic and antimicrobial nylon, all of which are removable and washable
  • 17 points of ventilation with chin, side, forehead top and rear vents
  • Retention system is quick release with sewn on ECE logo
  • Provides ample ear cavity space for most speaker systems
  • A clear coat finish to protect paint & graphics
  • Meets or exceeds both ECE 22.05 and DOT FMVSS-218 motorcycle helmet safety standards

starrating Great Helmet

This helmet is exactly what I needed for my off road adventures in Central Oregon! Fortunately, I was able to visit the Atomic Moto store in Bend and they guided me through the purchase process. The owners have many years of motorcycle industry experience so I was assured that what I was told was based on research and experience.

starrating Dual Sport Perfection

Bought this helmet a couple weeks ago from internet reviews. Been in the dual-sport scene since 1984 when I junk yarded turn signals, tail light, and switches off wrecked bikes onto a new 1983 Honda XR500r. Friends thought I was nuts but this was the most popular bike on campus (especially with the girls...road/dirt/side walks/stairs/football fields/dorm room hall ways!). Many years of road and dirt and lots of helmets have galvanized my opinion on function and I can tell you AFX has hit the nail on the head with this helmet. Air flow is superb (maybe too much for really cold days but we are a bit tougher than the average road queen aren't we), and face aerodynamics keep the chin down for speeds up to 75MPH. Air noise is not bad, especially comparing to open face helmets/goggles that I'm use to. Attempted modular helmets but both brands I tried were heavy with limited side vision. For the money, especially considering the built in visor, this is a fantastic product for my type of riding (BRP XR650R 70 dirt/30 road). Thanks Atomic for the great recommendation, informative videos, and decent prices...light weight boots are next!

starrating Good value, but check goggle fit and condition.

Great value. True to size fit. Inner dark shield is easy to use. Lots of vents. Easy to use chin strap. Clear outer face shield seals well. Only minor problems I had: Most of my goggles don't fit well. I have a relatively flat face and the goggles don't seal completely against my face. They hang up against the frame. Still looking for goggles that work for me. I have plenty of room on the sides, but my goggles are too big, eyebrow to cheek. The helmet fits true to size for me and chin strap is convenient and well positioned. The chin strap rubber excess strap ring is on the wrong side, as if it was designed for a D-ring strap. You could get a large size o-ring, but I just used a doubled up pony tail scrunchy band. I didn't have a problem with the inner dark shield getting scratched, but there was excess glue on the fuzzy rub strip. It was smearing the dark visor every time it went up and down. I removed the inner dark visor and trimmed the glue away with and X-Acto blade. The nape cushion was biting my neck when putting the helmet off and on. The cushion is part of the helmet comfort liner and has a stiff plastic backing. I just had to rotate the comfort liner up/forward a bit. It doesn't take much to keep the nape cushion in place, just a piece of two sided Velcro will do it. Wish you could get a darker inner visor(sunny southwest riding). A fabric chin screen would be nice for the highway. I would buy it again. Just give it the once over before you put it in use.

starrating Doesn't feel like a cheap helmet

I have been riding with an FX-39 for the last two years and liked that helmet a lot. I added the optional (external) sun visor to it and never really liked how it worked. It always seemed to add so much glare and distortion that it made things worse when riding into the sun.. The FX-41 fixed that problem with an internal visor and much higher quality shields. Much higher quality throughout in fact. Every piece of this helmet feels nicer. One complaint is that there is a ridge in the bottom of the clear shield that catches the sun if you ride with it up. This is a much nicer helmet than the price would suggest. I would buy again.

starrating Good overall, interior sun visor badly sratched

I ordered a silver model and received Hi-Viz???? Oh well I guess that happens. However the real problem is that the interior sun visor is badly scratched. When the visor retracts it rubs against a screw or other metal part and each time you retract it scratches again. It appears either the visor is not shaped properly and a new one will address the issue or the helmet was not manufactured properly and all visors will scratch like this. AFX will send me a new visor but until I can install it I won't know if this solves the problem or if the helmet itself will need replacing. My advice is to examine any helmet you receive. You can clearly see the path the retractable visor takes and can see if yours will scratch or not. One star for now, once the problem is taken care of, it will receive five. The retractable visor is the reason I bought this helmet in the first place so I need this feature to function. Greg

starrating Exactly what I wanted!!

I have been riding dual sport with a motocross helmet and goggles for a decade now. I started noticing this style helmet a year or so ago, and then watched Long Way Around / Down and decided that I'd give it a go. I ended up ordering the AFX helmet because it had all the features I wanted at a good price. I just got back from a weekend of riding around Valley of the Gods/Moki Dugway/Mulie Point/John's Canyon, and I can say I am in love with this helmet!! Having the flip up/down outer shield, and the inner tinted screen works out AWESOME for the kind of riding I do! At faster speeds (60mph for me...) there's far less wind noise and drag on this helmet as compared to the MX helmet and goggles. I do have a few minor complaints... First, the chin strap seems to be a little far back for me. I have to run it a bit loose or I feel like it's cutting into my neck. (Love the quick release though!) I also had to do just a little filing on the bottom visor detent to get it to shut all the way and seal around the bottom. Neither of these are a show stoppers, and for the price, I'm happy to fiddle a little to make an otherwise great buy perfect! I called Atomic Moto to make sure I ordered the right size, and they suggested I follow the published fit guide. I was on the large side of M, so that's what I ordered. The fit is great! Thanks Atomic-Moto for a great deal on my new favorite helmet!!

starrating Nice upgrade to the FX-39

Very happy with this helmet so far. Love the new visor and it doesn't have any distortion like the FX-39 visor. Has very little wind buffeting even with turning of the head. Using Oakley Crowbar goggles and they fit even better in the 41 than the 39. The visor even closes with them on. Love the styling also. I haven't really found anything not to like about it.

starrating Great styling & packed with features

Had this helmet pre-ordered and it was worth the wait! Aggressive styling looks awesome & it is surprisingly light compared to similar helmets. Lens has good field of view & has no distortions. Flip down sun shade was the main selling point for me & is a definite plus. It's got vents everywhere & the chin strap is easier to use with gloves than standard D-ring straps. I'm really glad I bought this helmet.

starrating Awesome Helmet

I've owned this helmet just a short while now but it has lived up to my expectations. It not only looks great but performs very well. The shield moves up and down smoothly and has a good tight fit and is very optically correct. The best part of this helmet for me is it's concealed smoke shield. With a flip of a lever the smoked half shield flips down and retracts. I do a lot of riding where I start out in the day light and end up in the dark so having a built in dark shield at my disposal is a huge plus. Also the chin strap has a quick release ratcheting mechanism that allows you to remove your helmet even while wearing thick gloves. The venting system seem to work quite well. Full air flow is felt through out the helmet. The fit is true to size and very comfortable. Overall, this a a great solid helmet and I don't think you can find a better one for the money.
