The AXO Freedom Adventure is a good dual sport and adventure touring boot at a great price. It is a unique design, with some really cool features, that emphasizes protection above all. For those who still read, here is what you need to know:
  • The design is odd. The boots have a separate removable waterproof inner bootie. With this in, they are waterproof, with it out, they are not. Some people are put off by this, but we like it for another unusual reason: we prefer our boots NON-waterproof.
  • They have above average support for a dual sport / ADV boot. The ankle area is heavily reinforced AND padded, the shin has hard padding, and there are stiffeners throughout. Additionally the BOA system (more on this later) lets you tighten them down nicely.
  • They are great for walking. Light weight, good flex overall. The wide heel area helps too, and they are really easy to walk in.
  • With the liner out, they are really comfortable. The extensive padding at the ankle and BOA really wrap your feet.
  • With the liner in, they are average for comfort. They fit OK, just that the liner feels funky.
  • The BOA closure is great. We were skeptical of it, but it is widely used on snowboard boots and proven reliable. It is easy and highly adjustable. Best of all, you can really clamp the boots down, evenly and comfortably.
  • They are really rugged. This is an area that they excel at. Some DS / ADV boots feel wimpy, and frankly we are hesitant to use them. Not these, they are very sturdy yet also comfortable.
  • The Freedom Adventures are made in Asia. This means they do not have the fit and comfort of a Gaerne (nothing does). Materials are noticeably cheaper. But they are still good, and we would not hesitate to use them on serious rides....ahead of several other more pricey models.

BOMBER Summary: These are perfect for riders that really value protection, and are not concerned so much about waterproofness (which is overrated in our opinion anyway).  They are a great 2nd boot for those that have MX boots but need something they can walk in, and don't want to spend a lot. The odd design is not really an issue if you understand it ahead of purchase. Once you do, you will see these for what they are: a rugged DS / adventure touring boot at a great price, that comes with a waterproof sock.
