What more can we say on the Gaerne Balance Oiled Boot- We get the call at least once a week: I have a DXKRLGZS 400/650/800/950/1200. Do you have a boot that is softer than an MX boot, but has more protection than a street touring boot? Something that will keep me from breaking my ankle but will let me walk? We do, and it is one of the best boots in the world: The Gaerne Balance.

(NOTE: For a video review of the Balance Oiled Boots, click on the "VIDEO" tab above.)

DS and ADV riding may not seem strenuous. However, the bikes themselves are a lot heavier, and they are still ridden on surfaces where sudden loss of traction is common. And this brings a familiar occurrence: Lose the rear, plant your foot. Bike weighs 300 - 500 pounds. If you are wearing a boot with insufficient ankle support, you're toast.

We gush over Gaerne Balance boots so much because they blend super high quality materials - this cannot be overstated - with great fit, good protection, and just enough flex to comfortably wear and walk in, all day.

The Balance are made from MX boot leather, which is about 30% thicker than street boot leather. They have sturdy buckles and enough height to clamp onto your lower leg firmly. These factors distribute twisting force up through the boot structure. A plastic shin plate reduces the amount of fold / distortion in the leather, stiffening it further. On the other hand, they are light in weight and have a soft, easy-to-walk-in sole. They split the middle ground perfectly between street boots and MX boots.

Gaerne probably has the best fit in the world, and the comfort of these is outstanding. The entire upper of the boot is made from 5 pieces, so very few seams. This allows the boot to crease without pressure points. Best of all, they have a wide toebox, and are great for people with wide feet (unlike Sidi's...).

There are two versions of the Balance: this is the Oiled version, with an oiled leather that is a little softer, and features a waterproof liner. There is also the Pro Tech version, which uses standard leather, is a little stiffer, non-waterproof, and costs about $100 less. Both are BOMBER recommended.

  • Super-high quality full grain oil-tanned leather - probably the best boot leather in the world
  • Wide toebox - great for wide footed riders
  • 3 alloy replaceable buckles
  • Waterproof / breathable Drytech liner
  • Gum rubber sole for grip and easy walking

starrating As good as they say

The fit is awesome and true to size. I have problem feet and need a wide comfortable toe box and not too much heel - these are perfect. So comfy and good looking too. Note that the brown is very dark, at least on the pair I got, whereas the picture shows it to be lighter. But in any case, they look great. Thanks guys.

starrating Excellent fit

I bought these boots on recommendation from Brian and they have a fantastic fit. The boots are extremely comfortable and are easy to walk in. I even had a MC salesman at a dealership compliment the way they looked. The only negative I have found is the need for more protection for the left boot shift area. I also highly recommend Atomic-Moto as I received excellent help from them.

starrating Just what I needed in a boot

I've been wearing various boots now for a few years, from motocross to shorties. Right out of the box, these are the most comfy boots I've ever had on my feet. There is no need to put shoes on to hike or sightsee. I'd walk all day in these. I'm used to wearing Keen shoes, which run a bit wider that standard shoes. These boots run wide like Keens and a bit longer than the std shoe size. The only down side is the adjuster wratchets(not the buckles). They may move postion when unbuckling. Gaerne could have done a better job of securing this end of the buckle, but this is very minor and would in no way deter me from buying another pair. Buy with confidence!!!!

starrating Great boot out of the box!

Great fit, comfortable and nice on the bike--not too stiff, not soft. Nice support under the ball of foot standing on pegs. I wear 10.5 running/hiking shoes and boots, and have a slightly wide foot (do not wear EE, but cannot wear narrowly built shoes either) The size 11 fit perfect. Have not had much time in them yet, so I cannot access their durability.

starrating Amazing Fit

Brian knows his stuff, these boots are sized different then street shoes. I wear a 10.5-11 street shoe and got a 10 in the Balance Oiled, great fit and can walk all day in them. Thanks ATOMIC-MOTO!

starrating Great boot! But..

I read all the reviews and followed the sizing guide but the boots were just too narrow for me. Since I wear a 43 in all other footwear I ordered a 43 per the recommendations. As I stated before, the width of the boot was just a hair too narrow for me. I tried them without the OEM footbed and the fit was good enough to wear around the house. I always put a thicker/gel footbed in my boots and with the thicker one in I was in pain. I made a phone call and let the gentleman on the phone know my concerns and within a half hour I had a RA# to send the boots back. The boots are well built and look great for sure but just a hair narrow for my feet. No biggie I am hoping to exchange them for the Forma Adventure boots since they are supposed to be wider than the Gaernes. No complaints with any part of the transaction. If they fit your foot you're gold!

starrating The MOST comfy boots, ever.

Called up to get some sizing/fit Q's answered, and they were spot-on. These boots are THE most comfy out of box I've ever had, and in over twenty years off road, I've had a few. I needed something I could walk in for about 3-4 miles, concrete, after dual sporting it. I normally wear a 10.5 US, and the 11 is no problem. Some boots in 11 are Godzilla- huge all around. Not these. They are a simple half size up from 10.5. What a nice surprise. I fine tune easily via the free moving positive conventional straps. I use a neoprene 1/8" insole. I can also get my jeans worked down over them. Nice. I can use these when full-on single track with no compromises.

The boots are great so far. Super comfortable. I added Superfeet insoles which made them even better. Thanks to Brian for calling me and giving me advice on sizing. His advice came through and the boots fit great. I'd definitely recommend these boots to my fellow BOMBERS. Thanks Atomic-Moto.

starrating Awesome

I took these boots out of the box on a Wednesday night, put them on Thursday morning, and rode nearly 6,000 miles in the next 11 days. With no break-in, they were ridiculously comfortable, even having them on for 15-18 hours a day. They've proven to be 100% waterproof, and adaptable between 115 degree heat and 30 degree cold (winter really hasn't hit yet).

starrating ...These boots are fantastic!

BOMBERS, I really appreciate the time Atomic-Moto took with me to discuss the different styles of boots and their pro's and con's. I just got back from doing 3525 miles, 1600+ of which was on the TAT and the boots were great right out of the box. This is pretty amazing since I am anal about shoes and boots!! I experienced rain, cold and heat all in the same trip and I have to say that the boot performed perfectly! I even had to push the bike quite a distance and the boots were more comfortable than my Red Wings.
