THE NEXT BEST THING TO RIDING

Quin Cody Crash

Posted by Brian on 1/3/2012 to Product Reviews
Back in my R+D days, my team and I would spend lots of time looking at films and images of crashes. Most of the sanctioning bodies have raw footage, and make it available for study (try looking at 50+ hours of raw unedited soundless motoGP some time). We would pore over these visual aids, looking at how riders were hitting the ground to try and understand how to build better gear. Anyway, the footage does not tell any particular story, but I thought I would post some screen grabs of QCs Dakar crash, just for fun:

First, he gets jacked up by the rut and or rocks in the circle.....

The bike kicks up but good...

Somehow twists back the other way. Note body position....now past the point of saving it.

Here the speed is somehow tangible......

You can also see that the bike is now levering him into the ground. This is the worst outcome, creating a downward trajectory with the hardest impact.

Here it comes....

If you have ever had a hard crash, here is where you lose your ability to process sight and orientation, yet the sounds still register.

This is almost the point of stoppage. Note that despite the speed, he did not travel that far. That means he hit the ground more directly.

Obviously a little disoriented. Note the spun knee brace...not easy to do.

Once again, no particular story. But this makes folks understand just violent motorcycle racing is compared to other sports, and just how tough a motorcycle racer has to be. Verdict is currently a broken collarbone and a rung bell. The BOMBERS wish him well and hope he runs it again in 2013.
