Peter Starr's Take it to the Limit is one of the best motorcycle DVDs ever made. Starr's masterpiece was made well before the flood low cost DVDs in recent years. Whereas those get their excitement from rapid edits and music, Take it To the Limit has three hours plus of amazing footage that would be impossible to compile today. This includes MX, dirt track, road race, and some highly, highly illegal stuff on the street, literally right under the nose of the California Highway Patrol.
The footage is amazing, the production is pro, and the editing keeps things moving. But this is a film with more than superficial appeal. For example, seeing Kenny Roberts use every bit of his, ahem, manhood to go up against 1000cc Hondas, when Honda was throwing everything they had at winning, is both inspiring and a part of motorcycle history. And that is just one scene.
The film is a long version of the original, and comes with some cool extras. It features a documentary on the film, some extras, and a really cool 30 page booklet that really compliments the film.
Starr himself is pretty amazing, he threw a huge budget at this starting in 1976, a time well before YouTube, the internet, and DVDs. The film was actually shown in theaters, and did fairly well. We spoke with him on the phone about it, and he fliply said "I didn't care about the money, I just wanted to make a great film".
He did.
