Gaerne Balance Oiled Boots

We get the call at least once a week: Do you have a boot that is softer than an MX boot, but has more protection than a street touring boot? Something that will let me walk? We do, and it is one of the best boots in the world: The Gaerne Balance.

We gush over Gaerne Balance boots so much because they blend super high quality materials - this cannot be overstated - with great fit, good protection, and just enough flex to comfortably wear and walk in, all day.

The Balance are made from MX boot leather, which is about 30% thicker than street boot leather. They have sturdy buckles and enough height to clamp onto your lower leg firmly. These factors distribute twisting force up through the boot structure. A plastic shin plate reduces the amount of fold / distortion in the leather, stiffening it further. On the other hand, they are light in weight and have a soft, easy-to-walk-in sole. They split the middle ground perfectly between street boots and MX boots.

Gaerne probably has the best fit in the world, and the comfort of these is outstanding. The entire upper of the boot is made from 5 pieces, so very few seams. This allows the boot to crease without pressure points. Best of all, they have a wide toebox, and are great for people with wide feet (unlike Sidi's...).

There are two versions of the Balance: this is the Oiled version, with an oiled leather that is a little softer, and features a waterproof liner. There is also the Pro Tech version, which uses standard leather, is a little stiffer, non-waterproof, and costs about $100 less. Both are BOMBER recommended.
  • Super-high quality full grain oil-tanned leather - probably the best boot leather in the world
  • Wide toebox - great for wide footed riders
  • 3 alloy replaceable buckles
  • Waterproof / breathable Drytech liner
  • Gum rubber sole for grip and easy walking

I am 58 yrs old. Started riding at age 5. I have never owned a pair of boots that are as comfortable as these...ever. Very impressive boot. I can feel he brake and the shift lever, they are light weight and easy to walk around in. I made a good purchase. I wish that I had purchased these boots 40 years ago, would have saved me thousands !

The most comfortable boot of any kind i have ever owned. All day riding/walking right out of the box. They even fit under jeans .I had concerns how the gum sole would stand up to footpegs but its not an issue. Sizing was the same as my athletic shoes. i would and have recommended to my friends. Thanks Atomic for the fast shipping and the spot on video reviews.

Really excellent boot!!
These are extremely comfortable and well made. I've only done a few rides with them - but no complaints. I wore them around the house the first day and they are instantly comfortable. The sizing was right on - I normally wear size 9.5 for street shoes and ordered the size 9's - perfect. Brian is really awesome to do business with - made a personal call because my order was quite large and made sure that everything was what I had in mind - and it was. I will be giving these guys as much business as possible. Also: these boots were substantially cheaper on this site - I think almost $100 less than other sites I checked.

WOW Fantastic customer service!
Yesterday I talked with Brian about the correct size of boot to order. After some discussion he recommended a size 12. Today (that is right, one day later) they showed up on my doorstep and they fit! It's winter and I won't ride with them for a while, but I had to tell everyone that is thinking of doing business with Atomic-Moto that these folks rock! Ride Well

Great boots!
I watched the video over and over and thought that the comfort description had to be "relative comfort". I was wrong. These really are exactly as described. Beyond comfortable to wear with a large, roomy toe box, I've even worn them driving the car. Sizing was perfect, I bought the same size as I would normally buy for any footwear. I haven't had an opportunity to test the water proof features but expect that normal leather care will be required. I'd buy these again in a heart beat.

Famously comfortable and waterproof
We spent a month in Alaska this fall riding in numerous days of torrential rain of biblical proportions. These boots kept my feet warm and dry the whole trip. And they sustained no damage when I had a low side at 45 mph on the Kenai peninsula. Exceptional boots. I'd buy them again.

Nice boots dude
Way better than my Redwings I replaced. Decent support, quality leather, instantly comfortable, great style for around town, easy on, easy off. Lots of good things! They are warm boots, being tall, leather, with a waterproof liner. Some people talk about the price, but being made in Italy instead of china, the price seems quite fair. My only regret is not buying these sooner!

Fantastic Boots!
I purchased these boots for commuting, touring and adventuring. Don't let the price shock you, the quality is phenomenal and worth every penny. The boots fit true to size, toe box accommodates wider feet. I have larger calves from bicycle riding, but I'm still able to tuck my pants into these boots. Extremely comfortable. Would highly recommend them.

Boots are very good looking and low profile compared to my moto boots Sidi Crossfires. If you are looking for ADV style boots with good protection and very comfortable this is your boot. You can wear them with jeans or riding pants and they look good and are not bulky. Waterproof great. I wear a 11 ordered 11s and size is true. I have to admit that I look for the "bomber approved" as a key to purchasing products and it works! These guys are riders and I have yet to take back one any of their recommended products. Thanks for testing your products.

ridiculously comfortable boots!!
Expensive boots, they are. Worth it? Hell yes. My only complaint would be some ankle protection. High, high quality made boots. They feel like slippers when you buckle them up. Love the steel toe aspect. There could be a bit more protection but I imagine that would take from the great comfort of the boots. They are definitely waterproof as well. They grip fantastic too. Happy with my purchase!!

Completely waterproof!
I ordered these boots over the winter and shoveled snow to help break them in. One day when it really warmed up there was a lot of slush and water at the end of the driveway which put the boots to the waterproof test. I can testify that they are 100% waterproof! Two or three inches of standing water that I'm wading through and my feet were completely dry. That gives me a load of confidence as I use them this year. Of course now that the riding season is here I've been in them most every day. They're not completely broken in yet, but they are not at all uncomfortable and everything I've read tells me they will only get softer and more comfortable. This is the first full-size motorcycle boots I've worn but they're quite comfortable. I'm wondering what they'll be like in hot weather but if they breath as advertised, I'll have no trouble. Another aspect I really appreciate is the buckle system. No matter what people say, velcro eventually wears out and becomes less "sticky." With the three buckle system I will not have to worry about that happening (unlike my earlier pair of boots). If you're wondering if all the hype about these boots has any truth to it I can tell you that it's not hype - just facts. These really are everything you want in a comfortable, waterproof, dualsport boot. Of course buying through Atomic-Moto was a good choice too. They really are "boot geeks!" (that's a good thing by the way)

Gaerne Oiled boots
I had them shipped regular mail and received them in under 2 weeks. They are size 12 , quite wide with thick soft leather. A little snug, but I vary between 12 and 13. I think they will fit perfectly after being worn a bit. The buckles are much better quality and they are nicely lined.Nicely stitched. I tried them out on an ice oval and the soles were a little too sticky for foot dragging. I spent an hour wearing them off the bike while I adjusted suspension and moved a lever and they were very comfortable. They are a bit lighter and shorter than a MX boot and I can feel the shift lever and brake.

So far these seem like a great boot! I ordered the wrong size to begin with, but after a quick phone call got a new pair sent out in the correct size. Boots are comfortable out of the box, but I'm sure a littel bit of wearing in will make the fantastic. I only gave 4 stars, as the ratchet mechanism on buckles seems a little fiddly

so comfortable, I wore them all night at home!
I got my Gaerne Balance oiled boots super fast. I was en route to ride that weekend with friends. These are my first-ever motorcycle boots. I tried them on, and they were so comfortable, I wore them all night at home! The ride that Sunday was a mix of single-track and trails, with a few fire roads. I rode thirty plus miles that day. The boots were awesome! Worth every penny, and no problem shifting or staying on pegs. We crossed creeks and mud puddles, and my feet stayed 100% dry. Love these boots! Would highly recommend them :-)

Best quality boots
US size 10 44.5 fit me fine. I'll just reiterate what everyone else says about these - all true so far. Essentially no break-in. I got them for 80% street (KTM SMT) 20% dual sport, and I think they will work great for that. If I need more protection off road, I've got an old pair of HiPoint MX boots. However, as much as guys comment that there is minimal ankle protection, I'd have to say the HiPoint leather thickness and protection seems about the same. This might change as the Oileds break in more, but right now they seem to offer the same impact and torsional resistance. They are shorter than the HiPoints, but that means they fit under jeans OK for stealth street action. No chance to try them in my area, so Atomic Moto seemed the right place to order. First time customer, but I'll be back. Nice phone transaction to help with sizing, and they asked about my intended use for the boots, so I sense they want to help you get the appropriate gear for the job. Expensive kit, but I rarely regret paying for quality gear.

Perfect light dual sport boot
Everything you hear about how comfortable these boots are is absolutely true. I was amazed at the quality of the leather and materials to conform and stretch to fit my abnormally wide 4E feet, not comfortable out of the box but within a few days I felt I could walk out of anywhere I could get myself on my little Yamaha. These are perfect for me, a 250 rider who likes to explore forest service roads at low speeds and also commute around town. But those with bigger, heavier bikes or those who are aggressive trail riders might not be as protected from injury. The boots have a lot of flexibility, the ankle has full motion like a stiff work boot but with impact padding internally and burly metal clasps on the outside, and the sole is stiff but no full metal shank, and only light internal plastic protectors at the toe and heel. That being said they do look awesome and along with the comfort means I have no problems putting them on anytime I ride anywhere and that is a very underestimated feature with motorcycle boots and protective gear. If you don't want to wear it all the time It can't protect you all the time. The quality of workmanship and materials is obvious and after my 200 mile ride in the rain yesterday where the only warm and dry part of my person was my feet they are definitely waterproof. My experience with Atomic Moto was also great, I followed their recommendations for sizing and was not disappointed, I look forward to being a bomber for life.

If you're looking for a Trials specific boot, look no further!
I recently started riding motorcycle trials and needed a more flexible boot than my moto boots. At my first club event I noticed a lot of folks in these boots. Everyone had great feedback on their comfort. One rider even used them in the Scottish Six Day Trial right up of the box. They are billed by many as the only true waterproof trials boot although our SSDT friend would disagree. Function - These boots performed flawlessly day one. Super comfy to stand in and you can walk comfortably for a long time. They climb just as good as any hiking boot thanks to the sticky sole. Peg feel was unbelievably dexterous (albeit my first trials boot). I competed in a two day trial in steady rain and my feet stayed bone dry. My secret was over the boot pants but rest assured I stood in ankle deep water several times walking sections that day. A little newspaper in them at night took care of any residual dampness form sweat. Fit - I wear a size 13 in my Sidi Crossfire TAs, Alpinestar road boots and street shoes. These fit true to size. I got a small hot spot where the boot flexes on the outer right ankle but that's not uncommon for me. Protection - They're not a moto boot nor are they designed to be. There's some minimal shin protection behind the logo otherwise it's just thick leather with some padding. Having caught a peg on top of the foot a few times it's not terrible. What you gain in flexibility you lose in protection but that's obvious. If you're weighing if they're worth spending the extra $$$ I'd say they have been for me. Brian had some great input, buy from Atomic when you decide to pull the trigger. They're good folks!

Really happy with them
Bought size 14. I usually wear a 14, occasionally a 15. The 14's worked, though they would be tight for me with really thick socks. I broke all of the rules with these boots. I bought them, got the box, put them on and then rode off for 10 days into NM, CO and UT. No testing, no break in. They worked great. They were flexible enough to walk in immediately. I walked on a number of short trails in them and they were fine (also had a pair of trail runners with me for longer hikes). Road in temps from 70 down to 25 and found them to be comfortable throughout that range. Had a couple of hours of heavy rain and sleet and my feet were warm and dry. If, like me, you are really tall and thin and have big feet and relatively small calves you will have too much open space at the tops of the boots - the velcro portion cannot be closed down tight enough. I don't think this will affect very many people and it is something I have encountered with other boots.

Wild Goose Chaser
I got these boots because my feet are weird. They are awesomely comfortable. The oiled leather conforms well to my feet. And as they break-in, they are getting a little bigger, which is a good thing for me, as they started quite snug in the toe box. Now I can wear my preferred thick socks, and probably even a low-volume after-market foot bed. The waterproofing has held-up through multiple deep puddles. However, I only have 200 miles of dirt on them. The downside - the protective factor is pretty limited - my feet don't feel armored like they would in a MX boot. Also, the calf opening is good if I wear my armor inside. Otherwise, my calves are so skinny, and my legs so long, that I can't fully close down the top of the boot on my calf. To do that, I'd need extra velcro, and to change the position of the top buckle, as they go out of alignment when the top of the boot is tightly wrapped around my stick-like skinny leg. Also, the buckles feel a little flimsy. They stayed closed through all my riding, but I would upgrade them somehow if I could.

Comfortable boots!
Only had these boots for about a week but so far they are great! The leather is a little darker than the pictures but I think they will lighten up over time. Also, as some have stated, this is the type of leather that when you brush, scratch, or rub it it leaves a "mark" in the leather, I don't mind as it lightens the leather some but I'm sure it would buff out with some leather soap and a buffer. Other than that, the clasps are nice, inner liner is nice, and I'm just waiting to really get to use them to break them in!

Money well spent Thanks AM
Purchased my boots on the web 9/18/13, they showed up 9/21/13. Atomic-moto was one of the only sites that carried the Balance Oiled boots in size 14 (49). AND, they had a great price, better than all of the other sites that I checked. I am so glad that I found these guys thru posts and positive feedbacks on the ADV forum. Boots fit and finish is perfect and they are so comfortable. I asked my wife if I could wear them to bed tonight as I do not want to take them off of my feet. I fully expect to have these boots for life they are of such high quality. If you are thinking about them, but them, you will not be disappointed. Regards, Pete - Chandler, AZ, BMW R1200 GS/A
